Hunter Steam in Preservation - Richmond Vale

A mere stone's throw from Newcastle, Toronto and Maitland lies a well preserved piece of local engineering history. Fully manned by passionate volunteers The Richmond Railway Museum caters for everyone; from the inner childhood memories of the steam lovers, to the sprouting Thomas the Tank Engine fans.

Entry to this marvelous exhibition and history is FREE. All you need to pay for are the rides, and in doing this you are contributing to the maintenance and upkeep of a great Heritage site.

The non-for-profit organisation was formed back in '79 with the aim of preserving the rail & mining heritage of Messers J & A Brown.

I pitched up with my 3 year old daughter at around 11am, we had a great walk around the site, had lunch, then went around again to take advantage of the rides. We eventually left at around 3pm. So, with this in mind you can aim for a 4 hour visit.

The main event, for the both of us, was the Richmond Main to Pelaw Main round-trip onboard the Steam train. It was purely magnificent. From the smell of the leather seats to the wafting plumes of smoke and steam from the engine, you get thrown into an Enid Blyton novel. And to top it off, the historic speech from the museum staff gives you purpose as to why you are there.

You can easily find the museum and site on Main Rd 135, Leggets Drive (the Kurri - Toronto road), about 4km from Kurri Kurri. The gates open at 10am and the day goes on until 4pm. Within the grounds are ample parking, picnic areas, a canteen and a souvenir shop.

Visit the museum's website for more detailed and up-to-date information - see below.

To end this little snippit, we were made aware of the amazing work being carried out by the people at the Donkey Sanctuary - Donkey Welfare with Heart. Based in Bishops Bridge NSW, this incredible rescue team rescues and provides loving care for Donkeys.
